Leonardo DiCaprio tells of encounter with Phoenix hours before his death

Leonardo DiCaprio says he saw his idol River Phoenix only once – just hours before he died of a drug overdose. The Titanic star admits the brush with young fame – and its tragic consequences – was a lesson to him growing up in Hollywood.
“When I was 18, River Phoenix was far and away my hero,” Leo admitted to Esquire magazine in the US. “Think of all those early great performances – My Own Private Idaho, Stand by Me. I always wanted to meet him. One night, I was at this Halloween party, and he passed me. He was beyond pale – he looked white. Before I got a chance to say hello, he was gone, driving off to the Viper Room, where he fell over and died. That’s a lesson.”
